Doubling Point Lighthouse - Arrowsic Island, ME

The Doubling Point Lighthouse was built in 1898 on Arrowsic Island, on the Kennebec River, near Bath, Maine. The original structures included a lightkeeper’s house, a shed, a fog bell tower, and a lighthouse tower. A stone pier was constructed in 1899, and the lighthouse was moved on to it. A boathouse was built in 1901.

Merritt Parker Pinkham, from Southport, Maine, was the first keeper. He moved to the island with his wife, Mary, and their two children. He remained the lighthouse keeper until 1931, when he retired. Charles W. Allen, of Eagle Island, took over as the second keeper. He would be the last one as the keeper’s house was sold to a private owner in 1935. The fog bell was removed in 1980, and its current location is unknown. The Friends of Doubling Point Light offered a $1000 reward for its return in 2007.

The lighthouse is still in use today, and is managed by the US Coast Guard.
