Driving down Route 1 in South Florida for a beach trip with the kids you can make their day with a visit to the Sandoway Discovery Center in Delray Beach.
This engaging nature center which opened its doors in 1998 for children of all ages, allows them to get up close to sharks and colorful reef fish in a 15,000 gallon coral reef pool, including a stingray touch tank.
Here there is Southeast Florida’s largest private shell collection (over 10,000), a butterfly garden, reptiles, birds and amphibians with hands-on experience.
It’s like an one hour environmental field trip that inspires students and visitors to care for Florida’s fragile coastal ecosystems using live animal encounters, interactive learning, including an Everglades room showcasing wetlands and hammock ecosystems.
The Sandoway House is one of the last remaining resort colonial revival houses in Delray Beach built during the Great Depression, retaining the oceanfront garden and setting that was typical of the neighborhood in the 1930s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Admission is only $10 and children two and under are free. It’s open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4:00 p.m.
And since it’s right across the street from the beach you can easily make a wonderful day of this.
