Iguana Racing: A Wild Reptilian Tradition in Islamorada, Florida
These yearly reptilian races are hosted by the Florida Keys Brewing Company located in Islamorada.
While the cold weather knocks the lizards out of the trees, the black spiney-tailed iguanas found all over South Florida are known as the world’s fastest lizards capable of speeds of up to 21.5 mph.
These high energy and often comical race events often serve as spectacles to highlight and control the invasive population while
sometimes benefiting local animal shelters.
At these running of the reptiles events they sometimes replace live animal races with humans running around in iguana costumes, then chugging beer.
The Florida Keys Brewing Company is the first microbrewery in the Keys and offers a wide selection of innovative beers in a laid back island style setting with live music nightly.
With over 20 different brews on tap such as Hurricane Hole, Iguana Bait, Spearfish Amber Ale, Honey Bottomed Blonde, Spiny Hopster, Lighthouse Lager, Mermaid Haze, Stoned Iguana, Smugglers Moon and Run Aground Brown, it’s best to order the special beer flight with five different beers to taste.
And the tropical beer garden, you can play giant jenga and cornhole.
Locals and tourists alike have made it one of the most favorite hangout spots in the upper Keys and the food is excellent, and it is dog friendly.
This is a good place to stop off Route 1 because it’s a hundred miles more before you reach Key West.
