Pike's Mile Markers

Along Route 1 between Robbinston and Calais, Maine, you will find 12 granite slabs engraved with the words “Miles to Calais” and the numbers 1-12. The slabs were erected sometime between 1866 and 1882 by James Shepherd Pike, a widely known journalist, diplomat, and politician. It is said that Pike used these mile markers to gauge the performance of his horses as he raced them into Calais. Read more about James Shepherd Pike. Location: Robbinston ME
