Sign of the Month for April 2024

Along Route 1 on the part of the highway that is still named the Jefferson Davis Highway sits this motel, named for the President of the Confederacy.  Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy, and Jefferson Davis is buried just 5 miles from Davis’ grave in the Hollywood Cemetery.  As a part of the Black Lives Matter movement, many monuments and statues were removed from public places in and around Richmond.  Sometimes names are harder to remove.  Although Davis’ name was removed from parts of US Route 1 in Northern Virginia, the section from Richmond to Petersburg still bears his name.
