It was post-war America, 1948 in Jacksonville, Florida when assorted Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Ford’s were parked around a 650 square foot building with nearly 1800 people lined up down Edgewood Avenue, standing in line to taste the new soft-serve ice cream.
It was the grand opening of the historic walkup stand called Creamette, and they even had a drive-thru so you could eat in your car.
The local newspaper said they served more than 1200 cones that day, along with their classic dipped cones, hot fudge sundaes, root beer floats, banana splits, freezes and famous milk shakes.
In 1969 Creamette changed its name to Dreamette and expanded into several locations in North Florida such as Springfield, San Marco, Atlantic Beach. St Johns County and Clay County.
Growing up in Jacksonville you certainly knew about Dreamette’s soft-serve ice cream and their waffle cones. If you were good, you could always convince your mom or dad to take you there.
So for 78 years Dreamettes has been feeding one of the better human urges around town and on a hot Florida day its always been a great place to take the kids and bring your dogs.
