The 2025 Flooding of Key West

Key West saw its wettest February day in 13 years on Monday, February 24, 2025, as an area of low pressure delivered a deluge of rain, which caused urban flooding.  Significant street flooding in Key West happened after 6 – 8″ fell across parts of the city, greatest rainfall officially for them since at least September 2022 (Hurricane Ian). The low-pressure system that brought these storms dropped as much as 4 inches of rain in some places in the Sunshine State. The rain was beneficial for many parts of the state, which are experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions, but it came with a lot of flooding damages. The low elevation and porous nature of the Florida Keys makes Key West prone to coastal flooding, on average, several times each year. Low-lying areas can easily experience flooding due to higher tides, despite not being particularly close to shore. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s “2022 Sea-Level Rise Technical Report” findings showed that “Sea level along the U.S. coastline is projected to rise, on average, 10 – 12 inches (0.25 – 0.30 meters) in the next 30 years (2020 – 2050), which will be as much as the rise measured over the last 100 years (1920 – 2020).” Location: Key West FL
