There is a legendary story about the spirit of Enriquetta Marrero that still haunts the Marrero’s Guest Mansion in Key West.
The house was built by Francesco Marrero, a prominent cigar maker to lure his beloved Enriquetta to the island from Cuba. They later got married and had 8 children together, but when Francisco died of what was supposed to be a routine busuness trip to Cuba, Enriquetta got more devastating news.
She found out she had no legal claim to any of Francisco’s property. Their marriage wasn’t legitimate since he had another wife in Cuba, whom he never legally divorced.
Enriquetta and the children were evicted from the house and before leaving she announced to any onlookers that “I will always remain in spirit at the house she loved”.
She apparently has returned to the house after death as both guests and hotel staff have felt her presence in the house..
Built in 1889 it’s like stepping back in time as the mansion is steeped in mystique and history and it has lovingly been restored to its former glory.
There are twelve rooms in total to choose from, but Enriquetta’s spirit is apparently strongest in room 7, where it’s said that she disliked guests and would sway the chandeliers back and forth.
Guest’s who have stayed in that room have gotten a visit from her, where she would enter the room looking for her hairbrush and would sit on the foot of the bed while the smell of her lavender perfume would fill the room.
Additionally Enriquetta’s apparition, as well as shadow figures have been seen in the hallway.
Children’s giggles and the sound of a baby crying has also been heard, however Marrero’s Guest Mansion is only 21+.
