Video Postcard from Columbia, SC
Each time I spend a few days in the same spot on Route 1, I try to make a video highlighting a few of my views from the road. I love that I have the chance to see these places in different seasons of the year. Columbia is an interesting city because it survived the devastation of the Civil War and overcame urban blight in the 1950’s and ’60’s. It still struggles with its racist past. Like Austin, TX, it is a state capitol, it is home to a major state university (USC), and it is a cultural oasis in the midst of a conservative region. Two remarkable pieces of the city’s history are covered here; the West Gervais Street Historic District, also known as the Congaree Vista, and the Gervais St Bridge over the Congaree River, built in 1928.
