Exploring the Unforgettable: Roadside Attractions on Route 1
There’s so much to be seen on Route 1! This video pays homage to the places that make you put on the brakes, do a U-turn and go back to take a closer look at what you just passed on the roadside. From fearsome, oversized animals to miniature golf courses to exotic motel signs to displaced icons, it’s hard to believe that all of these images are just from South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
Lindsey Buckingham provides the soundtrack from National Lampoon’s Vacation featuring the unforgettable wordless exchange between Christie Brinkley driving a Ferrari and Chevy Chase in the family station wagon. The film was released in 1983.
John Margolies’ photos of roadside attractions from the late 1970s and early ‘80s are part of the photo montage to deepen the ’80’s kitsch. Margolies’ “Roadside America” collection is viewable through the Library of Congress
