Located on the Penobscot River in Prospect, Maine lies the best-preserved military fortifications on the New England seacoast. Fort Knox was established in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River Valley against British naval incursion.
Open from May 1-October 31 from 9:00 am to sunset, Fort Knox is a historically rich, family-friendly stop with beautiful views and intriguing nooks to explore. If you go, be sure to also visit the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, adjacent to the fort.
