Then and Now - The Weymouth Theatre - Weymouth, MA

The Gem Theatre was opened in early 1927 in Weymouth Landing, serving the northwest corner of Weymouth and the southeast corner of Braintree. It was built on the site of Arnold’s Tavern, which was constructed in 1741, and was reportedly visited by George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The 712 seat theater was purchased by Fred Markel in late 1927, and renamed the Markel Theatre.

By 1931, the Gem Theatre had been renamed the Weymouth Theatre. It remained open and operational in 1952, but had closed down by 1955. It was demolished in 1960, and the area remained an empty lot until 2019, when an apartment building was built on the site.
