In August 1984, 18-year-old Linda Maxwell spent an evening with her friends in Calais, Maine. Two days later, her body was found along the St. Croix River in nearby Robbinston. Her murder remained unsolved for more than four decades.
These Washington County communities sit along U.S. Route 1. For residents who remembered Linda, the case stayed close to home. A renewed Maine State Police investigation included 35 interviews and another examination of Linda’s remains. In May 2025, police arrested Raymond Brown, formerly of Pembroke, following a traffic stop in Bangor.
Brown had offered Linda a ride home that night. At his trial in Machias, a former cellmate testified that Brown described killing her. The defense challenged that testimony, but on October 8, 2026, the jury found Brown guilty after about an hour of deliberations.
