Eartha, the World's Largest Globe - Yarmouth, ME
Eartha, the world’s largest revolving and rotating globe, is in Yarmouth, Maine. It was built in 1998, in the headquarters of the DeLorme Mapping Corporation. The globe weighs 5,600 pounds, has a diameter of 41 feet, and was built at a scale of 1:1,000,000. Like most globes, it’s mounted at a 23.5-degree angle, the same tilt as the Earth. Eartha simulated one Earth revolution every 18 minutes, but it can be sped up to as quickly as one minute.
It was designed by David DeLorme, the former CEO of DeLorme Maps, and Map technician Jeff Clark constructed the almost 800 map panels that cover the globe. It’s contained in an atrium, and can be seen from U.S. Route 1. In 1999, surveyors hired by the Guinness Book of World Records found the globe was 10.5 inches smaller than it was designed. Despite that, it was still the largest in the world beating out the Globe of Peace in Pesaro, Italy, and was added to the Guinness Book of World Records.
DeLorme was purchased by Garmin in 2016. Garmin didn’t make many changes to the building. The atrium is open to the public during business hours.
