Kid Friendly Stops in Calais, Maine
If you find yourself looking for a fun way to spend the day with your kids, Calais Maine may have just the right mix of history, science, and fun you are looking for!
Traveling north on Route 1, your first stop is actually 9 miles before you reach Calais proper;
St Croix Island International Historic Site – This is a great way to walk off some energy and experience a little bit of North American history in one visit. A self-guided walking trail, visitor center, beautiful views, and even a chance to become a Jr. Ranger awaits!
The Calais Free Library – Next comes the Calais Free Library. This welcoming stop is the perfect cool respite you need after a long day of travel. The librarians are historians as well as exceptionally good with children. Be sure to check out every floor from the kid’s part of the library at the top, down to the lower level that hosts a changing assortment of artwork from local artists.
Wabanaki Cultural Center and Museum – Located in the same building as the Maine State Visitor Information Center, there is so much to see here, you will be amazed. First off, you are greeted on the lower level with a fascinating touch tank. Learn about the incredible tides of the Bay of Fundy and the creatures that can be found within. Then, step inside the Wabanaki museum and learn about some of the histories of the five tribes of native peoples in the area. Truly a visit your entire family will remember.
You can certainly visit all of these stops in one day, but we recommend taking your time and really experiencing each stop. You won’t regret a moment of it.
