PIkeswoods Rest Area
Just 3 miles south of Calais proper lies a rest stop that really is more of a destination than a quick break from the long drive. Pikeswoods rest area is a beautifully kept spot with breathtaking views of the St. Croix river and Canada. This scenic lookout offers picnic tables to enjoy your meal while overlooking the river and watching the occasional boat go by. Beautifully kept up by the St. Croix Historical Society, it’s worth the trip.
After updating the rest stop in 2020, visitors now have a perfect view of the Whitlock Mills Lighthouse. This is the northeasternmost lighthouse in the country. It was also the last lighthouse to be built in the state of Maine. No longer open to the public, a distant view is the best one can get.
