Discover Aviles Street the Oldest Street in America

Aviles Street in St Augustine, Florida is recognized as the oldest platted street in the continental United States.

Formerly called Calle Dell Hospital (Hospital Street), because it housed the Spanish Military hospital. It was renamed in 1924 to honor the city’s Spanish Sister city Aviles.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, it’s existence first appeared on Spanish maps during the 1580’s.

Archeologists have uncovered pottery shards beneath the modern brick paving that date back to the 1600’s verifying its Spanish colonial roots. The street was the central medical hub of the city with the Spanish Military hospital, along with an early church, cemetery, boarding house and schools.

During the 1930’s Aviles Street became St Augustine’s first official artists district when a hardware warehouse was converted into studios and galleries at 11 Aviles Street.

Today, only foot traffic is permitted on the brick paved road, which features galleries, boutiques and cafes.

This historic landmark blends history, art, and culture, with centuries-old buildings, which create an ambiance that transports you to a different era.

So take a stroll back in time on this charming brick street and enjoy this bustling arts district right off Route 1.
