Gravity-Defying Shenanigans and Sweet Treats at the Key Lime Festival in Key West
It all began way down south in Key West in the late 1890s when William Curry’s cook Aunt Sally concocted the pie in the kitchens of the Curry Mansion.
The traditional key lime pie contains key lime juice, sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks, with either a graham cracker or pastry crust, along with a meringue or whipped cream topping.
Every restaurant in the Florida Keys serve this wonderful sweet and tart pie and over the years every 4th of July weekend they celebrate with the Key Lime Festival.
A 5-day event of culinary Shenanigans topped by daily events as you sip and stroll across the island to restaurants and bars tasting pies and key lime drinks.
The world famous key lime pie eating competition at the Southernmost Beach Resort had 25 contestants from all over the world plunge headfirst into a pie to devour in under a minute, covering themselves in whipped cream.
Creative minds attempted to outsmart gravity as contestants dropped pies from the top of the Key West Lighthouse.
Everything from parachutes, to pool floats, to propeller devices attempted to hold a pie intact.
By the way Blue Heaven’s Mile High meringue Key Lime Pie has been the Critics Choice as the best.
