Hogfish Bar and Grill
Driving down Front Street on Stock Island past neighborhood trailer parks and a gun shop is the Hogfish Bar and Grill. During the early fifties a daily ferry from Key West to Cuba used to leave from the docks.
Hogfish is a white flaky fish that melts in your mouth, but they’re hard to catch on hook and line so it’s mostly harvested by spear fishing. Since they primarily feed on Crustaceans the fillets take on a taste that is reminiscent of scallops and lobster while it’s served a variety of ways here.
20 years ago Michelle and Bobby Mongelli took a rundown shrimper bar known as Nobody Knows and turned it into a restaurant even the local fisherman gather to eat fresh seafood.
Live music is often playing while Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Mac McAnally of the Coral Reefers and of course Jimmy Buffett have showed up.
