King’s BBQ Is Back! A Legendary Petersburg Favorite Reopens
In a recent poll of our travelers, we asked them to name their favorite barbecue restaurant. There was only one place that received more than one vote – King’s BBQ in Petersburg. But there was a catch when I started to research it. They were closed!
So how did this place garner any votes at all? Because there were people who believed it could make a comeback, and now it has. For the first time in three years, the slow cookers out in the back are producing smoked pork, beef and chicken with the trademark Tidewater/Piedmont sauce that gives it the unique flavor that King’s has been known for since 1946.
In fact, it was the sauce that kept the business afloat during the years that King’s restaurant was closed. You can order it by the bottle or by the gallon here.
I passed through Petersburg a few weeks before their official reopening, but there were employees stirring in the kitchen and the place was getting cleaned up. Signs were on the door signaling the impending reopening. Despite the cool sleety weather, the optimism was palpable. Now you can taste what all of the fuss is about every Thursday, Friday & Saturday beginning at 11 am.
True to form, they’ve been selling out of food regularly. When they do they just close the doors and customers wait until the next day. When I return, I’ll be hovering around for their 11am opening and not taking the chance they’ll be sold out!! Get the latest updates from their Facebook feed
