Strange Ways in New Haven prides itself in being unique; even the name is a reference to “strangeness” as a positive trait. While many locally-owned stores that attempt to curate a selection of goods that feels individual – and often those goods are still mass produced and carried at many other similar stores – Strange Ways distinguishes itself by carrying goods made by independent artists and craftspeople. This approach is immediately apparent when entering the store, making Strange Ways a treat to browse and explore.
Strange Ways was founded by designer Alex Dakoulas as a web shop in 2014, with a physical store opening in Westville the following year. The physical location moved twice before settling in its current location in Pitkin Plaza. It has established itself as a contributor to the local arts and business scene by collaborating with local businesses like Armada Brewing, which created a fruited sour called Queer Occult that was inspired by a queer mixer hosted at Strange Ways. Pins and patches on sale at the store celebrate New Haven’s regional identity, such as the city’s distinction as Pizza Capital of the United States. They also sell jewelry, T-shirts, vintage clothing, retro candy, and much more, so you’re sure to find a great gift or personal keepsake that you can’t get anywhere else. They also host vendor markets and LGBTQ-friendly events.
Strange Ways is a perfect place for people who enjoy books, fashion, art, retro items, and pop culture. Positioning itself as an antidote to the boring sameness of malls and mass-produced items, Strange Ways is truly one of a kind. It also feels great to know that your purchase there supports the arts community!
