Clean Duds for Decades in Key West Then & Now
John Margolies documented this establishment in 1985 for his Roadside America project. Remarkably, the building remains mostly unchanged in 2023, although the neighborhood around it is rapidly gentrifying. Sitting at the corner of Margaret Street and Truman Avenue (Route 1), it is still used as a laundromat, with wash and fold service offered. When I visited on a Saturday morning, the place was buzzing with three women attending to washing and folding mounds of clothing, with dozens of bundles waiting by the door for pick-up. They seemed happy to have a short interruption in their day and to hear why I was so interested in the place where they were working.
