As is often the case, a library is a cornerstone of a community. The Calais Free Library is no exception. The numerous patrons enjoy a two story building full of an ever-evolving inventory of books, the displays are enticingly created to draw in the most reluctant reader, and the overall peacefulness makes this library a place to sit and pass the day with a good book.

What makes this library exceptional, is the energy and care poured into the experience by the librarians. Ours are joyful, intelligent, amazing at finding just the right copy of anything in print and always looking for ways to offer classes and fun events for young and old alike.

Library services in Calais began in the 1830’s. There was a significant fire in 1870 and a home was left to the city by James Shepherd Pike that was meant to become the new library. Due to the fire, however, it was decided that a stone building would be built instead. Boston Architect Arthur H. Vinal built the new building and it was once again opened in 1893.

In 1984 an addition was added and the building still stands today, welcoming anyone who would like to sit a spell.
