Then and Now - The Calais Hospital, Calais, Maine
The Calais hospital was incorporated as a for-profit organization in January 1917. Located on Church Street in Calais, it was a general hospital for the next 21 years. In 1938, a group of citizens purchased the institution, and it became a non-profit general hospital. Over the years, the building became unsafe for patients, and a new 44-bed hospital renamed Calais Community Hospital opened in 1956.
In 2019, the hospital filed for bankruptcy and was purchased by Down East Community Hospital and transitioned to the Calais Community Hospital in June of 2021.
