Betty is Still Going Strong in Melbourne, FL
Betty’s Antiques is housed in a 1914 wood frame building in the town center of Melbourne that used to house the post office and the land grant office. For the last 26 years there’s been lots of history on display, all of it for sale. Betty Young is a warm and engaging character. Most people who sell antiques are characters. Betty wouldn’t let me do an on-camera interview with her since, she said, “I don’t want to frighten anybody off with the way I look today – you’ll have to come back”.
Betty said that back in the Post Office days there used to be an oversized hook on the side of the building where people would deposit their mail in a sack that hung from the hook. As the train came through town the crew would reach out a pole to pull the sack off of the hook while the train was in motion. Such were mail stops in the early 1900s!
Everything item in her place comes with a story. So whether you’re searching for Mid-Century Modern, Edwardian, Victorian, Folk Art, or native artifacts, try a visit to Betty’s.
