Home of the Life-Size Chocolate Moose: Len Libby Chocolatier, Scarborough, Maine
If you’re traveling Route 1 through Scarborough, you’ll want to make time for a sweet detour that isn’t really a detour at all. Len Libby Chocolatier has been a Maine candy institution since 1926, but it’s best known for one unusual resident: Lenny, the world’s only life-size chocolate moose.
Standing over 8 feet tall and weighing in at 1,700 pounds of pure milk chocolate, Lenny has been delighting travelers for decades. He’s joined by a smaller pond of white chocolate geese, making for one of the quirkiest (and most delicious-smelling) photo ops on Route 1.
Why It’s Worth the Stop
Of course, Len Libby is more than just a moose. The shop is packed with handmade chocolates, buttercrunch, fudge, and seasonal sweets. Saltwater taffy, chocolate-dipped blueberries, and Maine maple candy are just a few of the local favorites. The candy counter alone could make this a destination, but it’s the blend of whimsical roadside attraction and true chocolatier craft that keeps people coming back.
It’s also air-conditioned,a welcome stop for road trippers in the heat of summer.
