South Shore Plaza Twin Drive-In - Braintree, MA

One of the first two-screen drive-ins in New England, the South Shore Plaza Twin Drive-In opened on July 22, 1960 in Braintree, Massachusetts. It was operated by the General Drive-In Theatre Corporation, which opened the first successful drive-in theater in 1935. General Drive-In eventually changed its name to General Cinemas after it opened the first shopping-center theatre in Framingham, MA. The South Shore Plaza Twin Drive-In complex comprised two screens, a children’s playground, a concession building, ticket booth and a miniature golf course. It was purchased by the Flatley Company of Braintree in January 1984 with some nearby office buildings for $11 million or $31 million when adjusted for inflation. On June 2, 1987, the Quincy Patriot Ledger reported that General Cinemas had closed the South Shore Twin Drive-In after 27 years. The lot is currently used as a park-and-ride lot to Logan Airport. The Concessions building was converted into a bus terminal, and the playground and miniature golf course were demolished.
