Mall Transformation: Woodbridge Center's Evolution in New Jersey

Woodbridge Center, a prominent two-level shopping mall located in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, sits strategically at the crossroads of U.S. Route 1 and U.S. Route 9. As of 2022, the mall hosts a variety of anchor stores including Macy’s, Boscov’s, J. C. Penney, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Historical Roots and Development

Originally the site of Maple Hill Dairy farm and clay pits, Woodbridge Center was developed by the Rouse Company and opened its doors in 1971 with anchors such as Abraham & Straus, Ohrbach’s, and Stern’s. Over the years, the mall underwent expansions and renovations, notably in 1978 with the addition of Hahne’s and subsequent updates in 1981 and 1987, which enhanced its appeal and functionality.

Retail and Entertainment Features

Managed by JLL (Jones Lang LaSalle Inc.), Woodbridge Center spans a substantial gross leasable area of 1,633,000 square feet. Beyond its retail offerings, the mall is distinguished by attractions such as a fountain, carousel, train ride, and a dedicated children’s play area. Unlike traditional malls, dining options are integrated throughout the mall, each with individual seating areas and restrooms, enhancing convenience for shoppers.

Recent Developments and Future Prospects

Recent years have seen significant changes at Woodbridge Center, including the closures of Lord & Taylor and Sears in 2019, marking shifts in retail dynamics. However, the addition of SeaQuest Interactive Aquariums in 2019 and Dave & Buster’s in 2017 have brought new entertainment options to the mall, attracting a diverse audience.

In February 2024, the ownership of Woodbridge Center transitioned from Brookfield Properties to JLL Properties, signaling ongoing management strategies and potential future developments for this thriving retail destination. As one of the largest malls in New Jersey, Woodbridge Center continues to serve as a key shopping and leisure destination, bolstered by its strategic location and array of retail offerings.
