Biscayne National Park
Want to spend a weekend of fun with the whole family? Biscayne National Park protects one of the largest Reef systems in the world and is covered 95% by shallow water, so bring your boat, rent a boat or head out on one of the reasonably priced tours. There’s snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, stand up paddling, fishing or hike through the shoreline mangroves. See manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, numerous species of birds and fish, even saltwater crocodiles.
When alcohol and gambling were illegal in the 1930s 27 buildings were constructed on stilts for clubs, bars, and gambling, forming an offshore getaway and party spot called Stiltsville Some of these still remain and there are several shipwrecks from the 1800 that are scattered along the reef. There’s also the Fowey Rock Lighthouse constructed in 1876 to mark the reef.
